What’s not to love about fitness leggings? They’re soft, comfortable, and versatile!
Fitness leggings are inherently designed for exercise, and so fabric performance based on your specific activities will of course be a key consideration in your choices. But with “athleisure” on the rise, fitness leggings are more and more making their way into our daily wardrobes, putting more of a spotlight on style.
Whether you’re in to bold colors, trendy patterns, or a little bling and sparkle, there are many options that will work with any look. However, it can be a little tricky to sort out which leggings will make you look and feel your best.
Choosing fitness leggings that are most flattering on you will not only depend on your body shape, but also what you pair your leggings with (i.e. should you wear a tunic, a tank top, or just a simple t-shirt?). The possibilities are virtually endless. So how do you figure it all out?
Don’t fret my friends, I’m here to shed some light on the best fitness legging styles (and pairings) for your body type to create both stylish and flattering looks!
1. The high-waisted legging + oversized side-tie t-shirt
Often considered the most versatile of the bunch, the high-waisted legging is perfect for hour-glass figures, but is honestly flattering on almost any body shape and height. For curvy shapes who are wider on the bottom, skip the prints and elaborate designs. Instead, consider options with cascading sparkle to give a stylish and slimming illusion of longer legs.
An oversized t-shirt with a side knot is the perfect complement to high-waisted leggings. For those who prefer more coverage in the rear, make sure you choose longer shirt styles to ensure adequate coverage. Cropped tops are also a great look great with high-waisted leggings, but it’s important to choose what makes you feel the most comfortable!
2. The mid-rise legging + slim-fit tank
Mid-rise leggings are ideal for apple figures and can work nicely in both cropped and long styles. For optimal comfort (and to avoid muffin top!), choose a fit that falls just above your natural waistline. Neutral colors that don’t draw too much attention to the waistline often work best for this body type, and side-paneling with mesh detailing or low-key patterns can be incorporated to spice up this look.
A loose but slim-fitting top that just graces the hip line provides balance to this look. A flowy tunic style that provides full bottom coverage also works well, but if you have shorter legs, make sure the length doesn’t go too far past the hip line or it will make you look shorter.
3. The low-rise cropped legging + back knot tank
Cropped legging styles are perfect for petite figures as they give the illusion of longer, taller legs. In addition, cropped styles eliminate the risk of fabric bunching up at the ankles (unlike their full-length counterparts). This legging style looks great in prints, patterns, color blocks, and even cutouts, so feel free to go wild!
A slim-fitting, hip-length top with a high knot tied in the back is a fun way to complete this look. Alternatively, fitted cropped tops that fall just above the waist line are a great option for those who like to bare their tummies.
4. The V-waist legging + cropped tank
Athletic builds and square shapes will love the illusion of curves from a V-cut waist. Be sure to choose a style where the top of the leggings sits right below the belly button – this has the added bonus of making the waist look even more narrow. While all colors and prints are fair game for this style, side-paneling or textured patches on the thigh area nicely complement the overall curved look of the V-cut waist.
A slim-fitting cropped tank or halter with just a peak of skin showing at the smallest part of your waist is a stylish finish to this look. While full-length tops are also an option, avoid tops that are too wide or boxy shaped, for they will make you look bulky and create a less-defined (or non-existent) waist.
Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and knowing what fits our bodies best is essential for creating styles that both look and feel good. So whether you have a curvy, petite, or athletic build, be confident in showing off your own personal style by incorporating these simple tips into your selection of fitness leggings and tops!
