So if you’re ready to create illusions of a longer, leaner, and slimmer figure, read on! The beauty of these tips and tricks is that they don’t require working out, and some even have instant results!
7 Easy Ways To Look Slimmer
1. Have good posture
One of the simplest was to look slimmer is to have good posture. This involves training your body to sit, stand, and walk in positions that create length and place the least amount of stress on muscles and joints. Whenever you are seated or standing, reach the top of your head towards the sky. At the same time, focus on keeping your head straight, chin tucked, and ears over the middle of your shoulders.
If you’re not used to paying attention to your posture, have no fear. As you work on your posture, you’ll increasingly become more aware of your muscles. This will make it easier for you to maintain good posture over time.
2. Draw in your abs
There are several muscles that make up your abs, or abdominal muscles. Most people are familiar with the rectus abdominus, the long muscle that gives the appearance of a “six-pack”. But one of the lesser known ab muscles is the transverse abdominis, which comprises the deepest, innermost layer of all the abs.
Although the main function of the transverse abdominis is to provide stability to the pelvis and low back during motion, a bonus function is that it acts as a girdle for the abdomen. What this means is that a strong transverse abdominis translates into a tighter, slimmer waistline.
Fortunately, you can effectively strengthen the transverse abdominis by simply drawing in your abs. To start, stand tall (or sit up in a chair) and relax your abs. After a deep inhale, exhale slowly through pursed lips while you gradually pull your belly button up and in towards your spine. Hold this position for 5 seconds and then release. Repeat 10 times.
Because these exercises are gentle, they can be performed throughout the day during down time (like while sitting at your computer or driving).
3. Choose fitted apparel over clingy or loose
It may be counter intuitive, but fitted apparel is better at giving the illusion of slimmer lines than clingy or loose clothing. While it may seem that loose clothing is the best way to hide perceived body flaws, it can add bulk in the wrong places, which draws the eye in a negative way.
Leggings are a great fitted option that can be used to create a variety of looks for fitness or when you go about your everyday activities. Go here for tips on which legging styles will make you look and feel your best (and what tops to wear with them).
It’s pretty common knowledge that black, and other dark colors, create slimming illusions. This is because they reduce the amount of shadows visible on your body. To maximize this effect, add pops of bright colors or patterns in the right places. This could be achieve with a fun headband or a cool graphic t-shirt with a colorful picture centered over the chest.
Just as important is to avoid color patterns that are not the most flattering, like horizontal stripes or any big patterns. Both have the tendency to make you look bigger.
5. Match top and bottom colors
Bold contrasts between your top and bottom draw the eye to the middle of the body. If you’re seeking to conceal this area, tops and bottoms of the same color are a great way to look slimmer. This simple approach draws the eye up and down instead of side-to-side, causing it to interpret your figure as being taller and slimmer.

7. Exercise… your face
While there are many ways to conceal perceived flaws in your body, not much that can be done to hide extra weight in your face. And since your face is often the first thing people notice about you, if you carry weight there, you’re likely to be self-conscious about it.
One approach to creating a more chiseled jawline and the appearance of higher cheeks is to perform facial exercises (yes, those are really “a thing”). There are lots of regimens out there (like this one) that can help strengthen facial muscles and give a more slim and youthful appearance. One last tip: you’ll probably want to do these in private!
